It also offers state-of-the-art media acceleration technologies as well as access to operating system resources, input devices and displays. The goal of OpenKODE is to make it easier for developers (and carriers) to deploy rich media applications on mobile phones, by providing system abstraction so that develoeprs don’t have to worry about the underlying handset hardware or OS. OpenKODE provides functionally similar to DirectX on the desktop, except it is cross-platform, royalty-free and streamlined for handheld devices. The first podcast previews the new OpenKODE APIs. In this new series, the developers behind the industry standards for 3D, 2D, video and audio for mobile devices describe how the new technologies work and how they can be used by developers, carriers and manufacturers to create applications for mobile phone, handhelds and game consoles. IKEA has a competing product, which of course only has IKEA items, and that's more successful. The Khronos Group has launched the first episode in the Mobile Media Developer podcast series. It's a great piece of technology that's not very successful. It's free, supported by sales from the furniture for which it has models. Now they have Autodesk Homestyler, a phone/tablet app which takes a picture of your room, builds a 3D model, lets you add furniture, and provides photorealistic renderings. Years ago they had Autodesk Kitchen Designer, for laying out cabinets to fit. AO is usually baked from geometry because it is created using a non-realtime ray-casting lighting solution. Similar map types: Cavity Map, Crevice Map, Curvature map, Dirt Map. But there are only so many design engineers and architects. An Ambient Occlusion (AO) map creates soft shadowing, as if the model was lit without a direct light source, like on a cloudy day. An AutoCAD setup was originally about $1K of software and $3K of hardware.Īutodesk has been trying to come out with low end mass market products for years. It was kind of clunky, but way ahead of manual drafting. The original big achievement of AutoCAD was cramming large drawings into a 640K DOS PC. The competition was selling high-end workstations bundled with a CAD package. Autodesk was originally, in the early 1980s, the price leader in CAD. That's what worries Autodesk's Carl Bass. 3D Studio MAX/VIZ, LightWave 3D, Softimage 3D &Pro/E. SGI was in the expensive computing business, and expensive computing was over. graphics workstation requires a high - performance OpenGL card and a robust configuration. They made a big commitment to the Itanium, Intel's attempted successor to x86. They got into servers, but 1U commodity servers crushed them. An Avid DS RP workstation does not require an OpenGL card to process OpenGL effects. They bought Intergraph, which built expensive CAD workstations. OpenGL for 3D DVE: In Avid DS Nitris, only the 3D DVE layout uses OpenGL. SGI thrashed around for years trying to find a niche. But it was close to the end of $10,000 to $20,000 graphics workstations around 2000, the gamer graphics cards became good enough to run the high end software. Impressively, SGI got their people to work together and produce Maya. In 1995, SGI bought Alias and Wavefront, each with their own animation systems. That's how Autodesk ended up owning the 3D animation business. They bought Alias/Wavefront Maya from SGI when SGI tanked in 2004. In 2008, Avid sold that to Autodesk.Īutodesk had developed its own 3D system, 3D Studio Max, which is still around. It was a product Avid was stuck with, and it had its own team in Montreal. Softimage could do that on commodity hardware.Īvid had no idea what to do with the 3D product line. OpenGL® has not been Certified and therefore you may encounter issues that have not been listed in this document. Certification of graphics cards was done using Nitrous Direct3D® mode. Its useful for all of us, for newbies and old hands & for straight 3D and more abstract experimentation, at least if you have a more recent OpenGL graphics card. These were called "editing suites", and cost upwards of $100K. The following describes important notes related to the graphics hardware certification for the for the Autodesk 3ds Max 2020 product release. Video Copilot has released Element 3D, an After Effects plug-in that lets you import and animate 3D models, even as a particle array, and extrude text and mask shapes in real time. Avid used to sell furniture they built computers with lots of accessories for handling video into wooden desks. Avid wanted Softimage because they also had a good non-linear editor, Softimage|DS, which was a threat to Avid's business. That ended SGI's reign in Hollywood between 19, studios moved off SGI onto PCs with lots of memory and graphics cards that rapidly got cheaper. 3Dlabs Wildcat II 5110 - Heavy-Duty Performer for High-End. Softimage sold out to Microsoft, which had no idea what to do with a high-end product other than to make it run on Windows NT. ATI also offers a special driver designed to maximize performance with 3D Studio Max, as Elsa does.
